A blue Merle french bulldog is just one of many different color varieties within the “merle” family.  Since merle is a dominant color trait, one parent will make it so that 50% on average of pups are Merle.  Colors include lilac, rojo, isabella, chocolate, black, cocoa, fawn, etc, to name a few.

The M Locus (Merle) coat color test reliably determines if a dog carries the M (merle insertion variant) Allele of the PMEL gene. If present, this test will also determine the approximate size (+/- 1 base pair) of the M allele(s).

Merle is inherited in a dominant fashion, meaning that only one copy of an M allele is necessary for a dog to display some variation of the merle coat color/pattern.  The pattern is visual by  dilution of black or any color pigment leaving patches of normal coat color within areas of diluted areas of pigment.

How does this happen?

M allele impacts canine coat color by altering the expression of the PMEL gene which is primarily located in eumelanosomes that create and display pigment. Next, the M variant  typically affects only pigmented areas and not phaeomelanin (yellow/red) pigmented areas like the pointed dogs for example that may have tan points.

The depth of color and size of the patches of the merle coat color is thought to be due to the unstable nature of the color variant. This ends up resulting in patches of colored cells with different sizes of color patches.  Each Merle Frenchie puppies end up expressing their coat color and pattern of color differently.

Percentage of Merle dictates the size of the color patches, as well as the variant sections. The size of the of the M allele(s) present in a dog have been associated with different merle coat colors/patterns.

What happens if both parents are Merle?

You cannot breed a merle French Bulldog to a merle, plain and simple.  This is important for all responsible breeders to know and fully understand! Interestingly, two copies of the M allele large enough to produce the merle coat color are thought to cause the death of skin melanocytes.  More importantly they can affect retinal pigment cells, and melanocytes of the inner ear.  Most important, this can result in significant white areas of the coat, even eye abnormalities and/or deafness.

How popular are merle Frenchies?

Very! We try our best to produce 50% of our litters in some variety of merle.  Our most common is probably blues, followed by lilac, than Isabella.  Our most rare is probably Rojo.  Rojos also will be the highest priced as the rarer the color, the higher the price point.

Similar to blue but lighter is the Lilac Merle Frenchie. Since the merle gene allows for a broken pattern on an otherwise solid colored dog the % of color patches also differ per puppy.  Among all rare Frenchie colors is the Merle including all of it’s variants.  This color pattern variation has been around over 10 years and become very popular over the last 5.  Working with merle studs on mostly all of our litters ensures that half of the puppies born here are with that pattern.

Merle Frenchie puppies

Here at DFB, we love our Merle Frenchies and try to produce some on every litter.  Our Elon produces some amazing Merle pups in all color combos as well as fluffy.  In addition for some litters where we are looking for Rojo we will use Goober.

Either stud provides excellent structure, health, DNA and temperament genetics.  We feel that the personality of the parents is just as important as the DNA for health.  After all, these pups are not cheap and an investment into your pet family.  Health, Structure and temperament come first when planning a litter of Merle puppies here at our program.

What does a  Merle French bulldog puppy cost?

Based on how rare the base coat is, typical high quality AKC Registered Merle Frenchie puppies start around $6500-$7500.  The black or cocoa will be cheapest with blue next in line.  Thereafter in order, prices increase with lilac, Isabella, Rojo, Chocolate etc.  There are also “new shade” versions of these colors that are a little bit lighter in color due to having an extra copy of the dilute color allele.  While some of these are more expensive than others, purchasing a quality Frenchie is key to enjoying this wonderful breed.
