Things not to do with a French Bulldog

1. Do not over heat your French Bulldog

Frenchies are affected by heat more than almost any other breed of dog.  It is super important to be mindful of this as a Frenchie owner.  Whether it be a puppy or an adult, as a flat faced breed they do not have the ability to dispel their temperature when over heated as long nosed breeds.  In addition they are a dense, deep chested breed, albeit a compact and small one.

The main thing to understand is that Frenchies have short muzzles or flat faces. Frenchies can easily become too hot and overheat in warmer climates or summer months. For the area your dog will go when outside, make sure there is some shade for your Frenchie.

By Providing plenty of shade as well as cool, fresh water water it gives your frenchie some cover and ability to stay hydrated.  Your home should be around room temperature year round for a French Bulldog to be successfully kept comfortable.

2. Keep their weight down

French Bulldogs are a small breed and should be kept in good shape.  Over feeding can lead to overweight dogs that have trouble breathing, even walking, or running.  Leaving a heavy set dog outside also can really be bad including hospitalization or even death.

Frenchies do not breathe well in the heat, especially when they are over weight.  For this reason we recommend a high quality dog kibble and a reasonable about per feeding, typically 1 cup for every 18-20 pounds of body weight, per feeding.  Expect a normal feeding schedule of twice per day.

3. Do Not Over Exercise your Frenchie Puppy

Be very careful managing your Frenchies work load.  The warmer, and more humid it is outdoors, the short the period of time they are ok outside.  As exercise and movement increases so does the dogs temperature and breathing.  Although exercise is an important part of your French Bulldog Puppy’s daily routine, you should be careful not to overdo it.

Exercising your Frenchie is a great idea, just understanding how much is enough, and how much is overdoing it is key. French Bulldogs as a breed are susciptible to breathing issues due to their flat faces.  Also their short noses, therefore periods of extreme exercise along with heath is often too much for them to handle. For these reasons make sure you are providing your Frenchie short, quick walks over long, intense, long distance running.

4.  Do not forget to bathe and groom your Frenchie

Frenchies like all breeds of dog need regular grooming in order to keep their coats healthy and clean as well as smelling fresh.  Sure they have short fur and are reasonable to clean when compared to other breeds of dog. However routine brushing, bathing and nail trimming nails are still super important parts of owning a Frenchie and must not be compromised.

Dog’s with wrinkles need a bit more attention than dogs’ without them.  Breeds that have wrinkles usually require daily wiping of the folds, or wrinkles. A Frenchie’s skin can be a breeding ground for nasty smelling bacteria if not kept clean and dry.

We recommend always keeping your French Bulldog puppies folds clean and infection free, it is important to gently wipe them down at least once per week. When doing so we recommend using a damp soft towel or even a human or facial tissue. Be sure to use a gentle product here too so that you don’t irritate the delicate skin in these areas.

5.  Do not Feed your French Bulldog from your table!

Frenchies, like many purebred breeds of dog will be susceptible to digestive issues.  Therefore, we recommend that you do your best to avoid feeding them table scraps from your kitchen dinner.  Of course you will have to deal with their begging and cute smiles.  We know that this can be really hard to resist but focus on the long term health of your Frenchie puppies. Always trust in a high-quality dry kibble, like Royal Canin Frenchie formula.  Lastly consistency is key with feeding your puppy.
